Vertical Potato Box Upgrade

Adding a second level and more soil mix to the potato box. 5/3/2010

Our experiment with a vertical potato box seems to be going well. The idea is to cover the bottom 1/3 of the plant every time it gets 12″ out of the soil. The branches then work their magic and turn into potatoes. Below is a shot of the potatoes less than a month ago. Right now the tops of the plants are about 3′ tall.

Adding a second level and more soil/pine straw mix to our potato box.

Have any of you grown potatoes like this in the past? I’d love to hear your success stories. You can reach us via Twitter @PlantandEnchant

Hi – I’ve grown potatoes in Smart Pots which are made of fabric. They work really well and come in lots of sizes. I look forward to seeing yours grow. There is nothing in the world like a fresh picked spud (except maybe a tomato or some basil, or peas….or, well I guess the list goes on).

Glad to hear you’ve had luck with a similar method. We’ve got our fingers crossed for some big spuds with this batch.

Not to suddenly appear as a ghost from the past, or at least Jabin’s wedding, but I have tried this using tires, with fairly poor results, but perhaps your method, or as the one responder mentioned fabric, it would work much better. Will be interested to see the harvest.

Nice to hear from you Chris! Yeah, we’ve already decided to adjust the method a bit here. We’re going to fill up most of the rest of the box with coastal hay – in order to let the potatoes fill out more. I think our soil mix is just too dense. We’ll see.

My spuds were all at the bottom. I’m thinking plant as the layers grow. Thoughts?
