Got this shot of our potatoes flowering, which seems to indicate they are nearly ready for harvest. We had a small, experimental, container of potatoes which we ate tonight. Hannah blogged of them earlier, but didn’t mention that they tasted really good and are making us extremely excited about the more ‘serious’ potato project in Garden Box A. I expect to harvest these in the next few weeks.

You’ve inspired me – I’m totally going to grow potatoes next year. They look beautiful!

Awesome, Leah!
Next time around we are going to do a potato box, rather than sticking them in the garden bed. They simply grew much larger than I was expecting and shaded out the plants around them. Plus, this vertical “box” method yields a crazy-large amount of potatoes (100lbs/4sq.ft.) and looks fun! Whooop! Check it out: http://greenroofgrowers.blogspot.com/2009/05/potato-box-experiment.html

Looks great! Even better in person….
Interesting factoid: the “greens” of potatoes will make you sick as a dog. I read somewheres that “they” used to use potato greens as poison back in the dark ages. So….now we know an organic way to poison people. Isn’t there a green solution to everything!

PS I love that you’re posting this stuff…super duper radical.

Dang, Neighbro. What is up w/all the poison talk? Should I watch out for you in an upcoming episode of Dateline or 48 Hours Mystery?
Thanks for the kind words about posting. I’m planning on taking pics over the fence to use as examples on how to do things incorrectly. Whoooop!
